The Sunshine Memorial Foundation is a North Dakota non-profit that was established by Van and Dee Larson in memory and in honor of their daughter, Shannon “Sunshine” Larson, who passed away in 2007, at the age of 31, from heat stroke while she was hiking in Arizona. The purpose of the foundation is to raise money for charitable programs promoting Shannon’s attitude of helping others.

The Sunshine Memorial fund “initiative” was started in 2010 by Van and Dee Larson with the support of the Dakota Medical and Impact Foundation.  As a result of the great support, generosity and enthusiasm from the community and donors, the Fund raised more than $30,000 at the first and second annual More Sunshine Walk and Fun Run, a.k.a Sunshine Fest, from which all proceeds were given to local charities. In 2012 a standalone non-profit organization was formed, The Sunshine Memorial Foundation. March 2012 to present, the foundation has engaged two independent contractors to fulfill the necessary tasks of establishing the organization. The organization has formed a Board of Directors, became a North Dakota non-profit corporation, and been granted tax exempt status as a 501(c)(s) public charity by the IRS. The Sunshine Memorial Foundation board voted in favor of sponsoring the foundation’s next project, the Sunshine Hospitality Home Project. Sunshine Hospitality Home Project  is the planning, fundraising and building of a hospitality house in Grand Forks. The Foundation has formed a partnership with Altru Health System for the project.

The Sunshine Hospitality Home will be a place for patients and their families, affected by critical illnesses, diseases, and injuries, who must travel to fulfill their healthcare needs. A hospitality house provides individuals with a place to sleep, eat, keep their belongings, relax and find comfort. It will be open to all ages and situations and will welcome families from the Grand Forks area and surrounding region. A place of compassion, a place of peace.

The Sunshine Memorial Foundation also supports, and will continue to support, several projects related to hydration and hiker awareness educational programs. Hydration has always been, and will always be, central to our mission and the effect it has on our lives.

We support hydration initiatives such as the “Don’t Wait, Hydrate”  program from Safe Kids Grand Forks.  Dehydration is something that can be prevented. Education and awareness can help to save lives. The Foundation also plans to sponsor programs and provide trail head signs dedicated to help educate hikers about all safety measures. As we plan and dream, we hope you will be eager to learn more about our great Foundation and how you can help bring a little “Sunshine” to the lives of others.

The 8th Annual Rydell Car and Bike Show Benefit was held on September 13, 2013 and the proceeds of $77,222.54 dollars where given to the Sunshine Hospitality Home to help get this project stared.  A lot of community and area support went into making this dream come alive.

The Sunshine Hospitality Home has now been completed and is scheduled for Grand Opening on June 26th 2018. It will be a outstanding asset to the community of Grand Forks and it’s surrounding areas.

The Company Story

Founder Jamie Lunski  established HB Light & Sound in 1994 after returning from a year working for Nashville Cartage and Sound – a gig he got through a contact he met working WEFest in Detroit Lakes. While back in Grand Forks he began working on event production and installs during weekends and evenings.

It wasn’t long before he was working over 40 hours per week during his “free time.” He decided It was time to quit his day job and acquire Delta Sound & Light in order to expand to Fargo in 1997.

The Fargo office, with store front and garage/storage space, has remained on University Avenue since the grand opening, while the Grand Forks office has moved a bit to accommodate for growth. The first Grand Forks office was located in a backroom just off South Washington but quickly relocated downtown to Kittson Avenue.

In need of more space, it wasn’t long until HB packed up and moved once again to Demers Avenue, next door to the Diamond Lounge. But it wasn’t until 2012, that HB found a comfortable place to call home, with plenty of space to thrive, in the old General Tobacco and Candy building, downtown on 8th street near the Demers overpass. In need of extensive renovation, this 17,000 square foot warehouse was transformed to include offices and a showroom/retail space alongside the much needed warehouse space, and opened its doors in August 2013.

Stop by either location, Fargo or Grand Forks, and we would be happy to show you around.

The company started with two employees and now has over 30 full-time and over 300 part-time employees throughout North Dakota.  HB has expanded to full production events, corporate events, theater productions to full commercial installs, whole home security and more.  We provide services for customers of all sizes and have a flair for staging events.

HB takes great pride in the community and sponsors many art and entertainment activities.

The agreement or contract will clearly detail the needs and expectations of both parties, the time frame set for the agreement, and an agreed measurement and reporting process for evaluating and reporting the outcomes of the sponsorship, partnership or related support. Only one application needs to be submitted for series events. All applicants must reapply annually for reoccuring or annual events.

Wheels for Work LOGO

Wheels For Work

The Wheels For Work program offers an opportunity for citizens from our community to donate a vehicle to a family in need. Rydells and the United Way of Grand Forks, ND and East Grand Forks, MN have teamed up to locate any unused cars, pickups, SUVs or vans in the surrounding area that can be donated to deserving families within our community in order to provide transportation on the road to a better life.

How it works

The process is quick and simple, if you have a vehicle that you are not using and are willing to donate simply contact the United Way of Grand Forks/East Grand Forks at 701-775-8661 and ask about the Wheels For Work program. All donations are tax deductible due to the United Ways public charity status and the donations will be used in the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks community.

Once the paperwork for the donation has cleared our team at Rydell’s will perform a thorough safety inspection in order to ensure the vehicle is street legal and safe for the families it is going to help. If small repairs are needed, we will donate our time in order to make any repairs prior to the donation to the family. When a family is selected for the donation of the vehicle through the Wheels For Work program, Rydell’s will assist with the title and licensing process, giving the families the best opportunity moving forward.

For more information on the Wheels For Work program please contact the United Way of Grand Forks/East Grand Forks at 701-775-8661 or Kathy Lind at Rydell’s at 701-772-7211, or visit the United Way Grand Forks/East Grand Forks Wheels For Work web page.

2017 Angel Tree

The annual Rydell Angel Tree's are up at both Rydell Chevrolet Buick GMC and at Rydell Honda Nissan so please come in to support this wonderful program and make sure that no child goes without a present this holiday season.

This is a program that helps to support underprivileged families around the holidays, it works by having kids create a list of wants on a sheet of paper, the paper is then placed on a tree located in all of our Grand Forks, ND locations. Contributors then will purchase the gifts and place under the tree so that no child will go without a gift for the holidays.

Our company has partnered with the Grand Forks County Northeast Human Service Center for many years with a great success, so stop on by either dealership to find out how you can make a child's holiday special this year.
