Despite being a small city, Grafton has established itself as one of the best places to live in northeastern North Dakota. The earliest settlers of Grafton were M. Christianson and O.T. Gorder, who took up residence on the northern bank of Park River in 1878. In the fall of the same year, Nils Monson and his four companions walked to the area from Winnipeg to acquire homesteads. Then, Thomas E. Cooper arrived with his family to settle permanently in early 1879. Portions of these settlers' homesteads formed Grafton's original townsite.
In 1879, Cooper named the settlement after Grafton County in New Hampshire, his wife's hometown. He also secured the area's first post office after traveling many miles to obtain the signatures of other settlers. This is why he is the main person credited with Grafton's beginnings.
With the arrival of the railroad in December 1881, Grafton experienced rapid growth. A year later, its population had increased to 1,500. Following the establishment of Walsh County in 1882, the prosperous settlement was designated the county seat. It was incorporated as a town in the same year and became a city in 1883.
Today, Grafton covers a total area of 3.57 square miles and has a population of about 4,000, making it one of the largest cities in northeastern North Dakota. It's one of the main commercial, educational, and cultural hubs for this region.
