OEM vs. Aftermarket Parts

What Are OEM Parts?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. What that means in the auto industry is that an OEM part is the same part, manufactured by the same company, that was originally installed in your vehicle when it first came off the assembly line. They use the same materials and identical specifications to create the part.

OEM parts, therefore, give you a precise replacement part for your vehicle. It fits properly, works the same, and even has the factory's warranty. With OEM parts you can count on their performance and quality.

What Are Aftermarket Parts?

Aftermarket parts are described as any replacement part manufactured by a company other than the original manufacturer. These can include high-performance parts, specialty accessories, body parts, mechanical parts, and interior and exterior furnishings and fittings.

What's the Difference Between OEM and Aftermarket Parts?

On the surface, you may not see a difference with the exception of the brand label on OEM and a generic label on aftermarket products. An aftermarket part will often look identical to its OEM counterpart and therein lies the problem. Most of us will see this and think they are the same in all ways.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Aftermarket parts manufacturers aren't held to the same production standards as automotive manufacturers. In other words, an aftermarket part only has to fit or work, but not necessarily to the same standards as the OEM part. Because of this fundamental difference, the aftermarket part is usually made of cheaper materials. This results in a shorter lifespan of the part, and its failure in some cases could lead to a breakdown or even an accident.

Another result often found in aftermarket parts is they fit poorly. One reason is that the part may be manufactured to replace multiple brands, not the single brand of an OEM. In simple terms, a part for one vehicle might be an inch longer or wider than another, yet they have the same functionality and therefore "work" but don't "fit" properly. It could mean it's a little harder to fit into tight spaces, or it might not even fit at all.

The use of lesser quality materials combined with lower production standards will save you money, but if it doesn't fit, doesn't work properly, or doesn't last as long, how much are you really saving? Most auto mechanics will agree that OEM parts are the preferred option.
